Post-Procedure

Physical Therapy is scheduled with Howard Head Sports Medicine: You will be scheduled for daily physical therapy visits. Dr. Philippon recommends staying in the Vail area 2 weeks following the surgery but requires patients to stay 4-5 days after surgery. This will ensure proper recovery from surgery and allow physical therapy sessions provided by our highly experienced hip physical therapists at Howard Head Sports Medicine. An aqua therapy session will be available on Tuesdays and Fridays when you are 3-4 days out from surgery. Howard Head Sports Medicine is affiliated with Vail Health and will verify your insurance benefits for physical therapy. It is recommended you know your insurance benefits for PT.

PowerDot: This is an electrical stimulation unit that can help with post-operative pain, muscle firing patterns and later recovery from training or sporting events.

Post op instruction videos: These videos can help you navigate the equipment provided the first few days following the surgery. They will review crutches fitting, ambulating with crutches, stairs with crutches, the CPM, the SCDs, circumduction, rotation bolsters, bed transfers and brace fitting.

Nutrition: Providing your body with fuel is essential to recovery. We recommend increasing your normal caloric intake by 500 calories. Your diet should include lean proteins and complex carbohydrates.

Travel: We will provide blood thinning medication to help prevent the formation of blood clots when you travel home. Postoperative anticoagulant will be determined by your past medical history, postoperative travel, and surgical procedure.

Medications: The post-operative medications you receive will be specific to your surgery and will be reviewed the day following surgery. These medications will optimize the healing process and help with pain control among other objectives to help achieve a successful recovery.
