Vail, CO Hip Surgeon, Dr. Marc Philippon, Comments on Common Causes of Hip Pain in Women

According to Marc Philippon, MD, orthopedic hip surgeon and partner with the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, “One of the common causes of hip pain in women is bursitis.”  Dr. Philippon was quoted recently in an article on Yahoo regarding the common causes of hip pain in women. The article states that according to government figures, America’s reported problems with hip pain tend to come more from women than men. As stated by Dr. Philippon, the source is often associated with bursitis.

The bursae cushions (fluid-filled sacs) represents the bony part of the hip that is close to the surface. These sacs can become inflamed from irritation or overuse which can cause pain whenever the person moves their hip joint. Bursitis results in chronic hip pain, tenderness, and for some, immobility.

Other common hip conditions stated in the article include: arthritis and osteoarthritis of the hip, femoral and inguinal hernias, tendonitis of the hip, iliotibial band problems and inflammation. Almost all of these are caused by some kind of overuse or traumatic injury.
